How to Choose a Podcast Studio: 7 Things to Check Before You Book

Booking the right podcast studio can be the difference between an episode that sounds professional and one you have to re-record. Before you put down a deposit, run through this checklist.
1. Audio treatment, not just gear
A room full of expensive microphones still sounds bad if the walls bounce sound everywhere. Ask whether the room is acoustically treated — panels, bass traps, and soft surfaces that kill echo. A treated room with mid-range mics beats an untreated room with top-tier ones.
2. The right microphones for your format

Most podcasts are recorded on dynamic mics like the Shure SM7B or RE20 because they reject room noise. If the studio hands you a condenser mic in an untreated space, expect to hear the air conditioner on your track.
3. Multi-track recording
You want each guest recorded to a separate track. That way, if one person coughs or their mic is too quiet, you can fix it without touching everyone else's audio. Confirm the studio records isolated tracks, not a single mixed file.
4. Video, if you need it
Video podcasts are booming. If you plan to post clips to YouTube, TikTok, or Instagram, look for a studio with multiple 4K cameras and good lighting — not a webcam in the corner. Ask to see sample footage.
5. Remote guests
Half of great podcast guests can't be there in person. Check whether the studio supports remote recording through Zoom or Riverside so a remote guest still sounds and looks studio-quality.
6. What's included
"Per hour" can mean very different things. Does the rate include an engineer? Editing? Setup and teardown time? Get the full picture so a $75/hour studio doesn't become $300 once you add extras.
7. Location and logistics
Parking, load-in, a green room for guests, and easy access matter more than you'd think — especially if you're recording weekly. A studio that's a nightmare to get to is a studio you'll stop using.
